More lawyers these days are opening up about their lived experience with ADHD. As a mindfulness teacher and special education attorney, I see this trend as a positive sign. Greater awareness promises better access to support and opportunities for understanding.
Even so, the number of lawyers who face the challenges associated with ADHD may be bigger than many people realize. One study reported that 12.5% of all lawyers have the condition. This means that ADHD is more common in the legal profession than the general adult population.
For this reason, I quickly accepted when Tracey Bromley invited me to participate in the Make ADHD Your Genius® Virtual Event.
What Is the Make ADHD Your Genius Virtual Event
This virtual event shares top strategies and practices from recognized experts, so lawyers can apply them immediately. In a virtual event that will span three days, Tracey Bromley Goodwin will interview experts to highlight the strategies that work best for lawyers with ADHD.
These 30-40 minute sessions fit perfectly into your busy life, whether you’re walking, commuting to work, or cooking. Speakers will also explain how to replace old habits with new systems, and capitalize on the strengths of ADHD.
In addition, the sessions are offered on a variety of topics to help you manage your day with confidence and accomplish what you never thought possible. Of course, one of the best ways lawyers can do this is by learning from carefully selected experts who have a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.
Check out the themes we are expanding on (authentic conversations with thought leaders):
- Focus: innovative tools for activating and sustaining your attention
- Burnout: what you may not know and need to
- Productivity: efficiency, routines, dealing with time blindness, boundary setting, new habits
- Increased Revenue: expansion, leadership, scaling
- Nervous System Regulation: hormones, mindfulness, meditation
- ADHD: science-based strategies, leveraging strengths, treatment options, brain health, executive functioning
- Parenting & Relationships: advocacy, communicating effectively, resolving conflicts
- Visibility: your personal style, AI, branding that works
This is why I am truly excited to share and participate in Make ADHD Your Genius® because I know it will give lawyers the strategies they are looking for to help them thrive personally and professionally (and you will definitely learn things you haven’t heard before).
There are lots of bonus gifts like free trainings and downloads which offer additional value. Each gift is designed to support you in developing new strategies for breaking through your challenges and bringing calm into your life.
My Session on Mindfulness, Compassion, and ADHD
As you might expect, my session discusses how mindfulness and compassion can support lawyers with ADHD. I’m not an ADHD coach or psychologist. However, I am familiar with ADHD due to my work as a special education lawyer and my experience supporting loved ones with the condition.
As a result, I am aware that ADHD can create particular challenges for lawyers, including relating to their own mental health. I was pleased to share one interview here with a lawyer who shared her story of getting diagnosed as an adult.
The good news, of course, is that mindfulness and compassion practices can help people with ADHD. The difficult aspect of this, though, is that ADHD can create some unique challenges for people interested in meditation.
That’s why, as I share in my session, it is important to have knowledgeable teachers who can share how to modify practices. It also really helps to have a community to support your mindfulness practice and groups like the Mindfulness in Law Society are instrumental in this respect.
One of the most important things that Tracey and I discuss during the session is the power of self-compassion. Lawyers really need this skill because our work is so stressful and risky. People with ADHD can benefit from it too because self-support is an integral part of managing the condition, including for tricky issues like dealing with challenging emotions or procrastination.
